Liars Poker
There are many games to choose from when you find yourself in a particular party situation. In parties where drinking is involved, there are two major groups of popular games played: first, the rather risque games, those of the drinking or the teasing kind; and the games of deceit, those which test just exactly how drunk and gullible you are.
The game of liar’s poker is a member of the latter group. It is not a card game, and therefore does not really belong in the poker game family; however, it does incorporate in its game one major detail that is used and needed in a poker game: bluffing. The whole idea of the game is to be able to bluff and lie effectively in order to win. It is a pretty easy game, actually, and can be beat if you are aware of different computations on probability, but at the same time, because it involves a little bit of lying and bluffing here and there, it is a good way of enjoying the fact that some of the guys in your party may just be a little bit more gullible because of their alcohol intake.
The mechanics of the game is easy: each player gets a dollar bill and takes a look at their own serial number, not showing the others their numbers. Then each player makes a wager as to how many times a particular number actually appears – for example, you have three players playing liar’s poker, and one tries to guess that there are four zeroes among the three of them. This guessing goes on until two of the players challenge the guess of one player – say, if one player says there are five twos and the other two players challenge, then they show their bills and check the serial numbers. If there are less than five twos, then the one who bet that there are five twos pays the other two players a dollar; however, if there are more than five twos that show up, the two players pay him a dollar. The more players there are, the heavier it is on the wallet, but at the same time it is really a fun game for those nights when you want to try a different game at your party.
